Add meal alternatives

Give a meal two or more interchangeable food options.

You'll need:
A meal with at least one food already in it

Some meals have more than one version - say, oats on weekdays and eggs on weekends. Alternatives let a single meal hold several either/or options, so you pick which one you actually ate each day without duplicating the whole meal.

1. Add an alternative

Open the plan editor and find the meal you want to add an option to. Once the meal has at least one food in its primary option, an Add alternative button appears below it - tap it.

The plan editor for Lean & Strong, showing the Breakfast meal with Rolled oats and Banana and their quantities, plus the sticky Plan total panel below it.

2. Fill in the alternative

You're now viewing an empty option page for the meal. Tap Add food and go through the same search/select/quantity flow as any other food - see Find foods if you need it.

3. Switch between options

Near the top of the meal card, just under its name, a small dot pager with arrows lets you flip between the primary option and every alternative you've added. Tap a dot, or the arrows on either side, to view a different option.

The Lunch meal card with its dot pager on the second option, showing Greek yogurt, 2% and Cottage cheese, low fat as that alternative's foods, above the sticky Plan total panel.

4. Remove an alternative

Switch to the alternative you want gone using the pager, then tap Remove alternative. This removes that option and all its foods; the other options are unaffected.

When it goes wrong

  • "Add alternative" doesn't appear. The primary option needs at least one food in it first.
  • My alternative's macros aren't showing in the plan total. That's expected - only the primary option counts toward the plan total. Which option counts toward a specific day's log is chosen separately when you log that meal.
